The Alabama Board of Medical Examiners divides type of practice into 90 categories, including traditional medical specialities such as cardiology and neonatology, but also general categories such as hospitalist and non-clinica categories such as administration, teaching, and research. The interactive table below gives the distribution of Alabama physicians by practice type, overall and by the rural/urban classification.

For rural physicians, the top three fields (in order) are family medicine, internal medicine, and emergency medicine. For urban physicians, the top three areas are internal medicine, family medicine, and pediatrics.
