Ernst Schröder was born on 25 November 1841 in Mannheim, Germany. He made important contributions in algebra, set theory and logic, and also studied iterated functions (a precursor to discrete dynamical systems). Schröder died on 16 June 1902 in Karlsruhe, Germany. He is best known for his work on the cardinality of infinite sets, particularly the theorem now known as the Schröder-Bernstein theorem, named also for Felix Bernstein.
