Jerzy Neyman was born on April 16, 1894 in Bendery, Moldavia. He studied at the University of Kharkov and the University of Warsaw in Poland, where he received a doctorate in 1924. Neyman was the head of a biometrics laboratory in Warsaw from 1928 to 1933. He taught in England for several years before accepting a position in 1938 at the University of California at Berkeley in the US. Neyman remained at Berkeley for the rest of his life. He died on August 5, 1981.
Jerzy Neyman made fundamental contributions in statistics, particularly in the areas of hypothesis testing, interval estimation, and survey sampling. His collaboration with Egon Pearson, the son of Karl Pearson is particularly important.
