Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, but soon turned to writing to supplement his income. He is best known for his detective books, featuring the meticulously observant and analytical Sherlock Holmes and his less talented sidekick, Dr. Watson. Dolyle also wrote historical romances. He was knighted in 1902 for his work The Great Boer War, based on his experiences as a physician in South Africa.
Sherlock Holmes always based his inferences on data, a lesson for us all.
