Most PCPs practice in family or general medicine followed by internal medicine and then pediatrics, overall and for rural PCPs and for urban PCPs. The percentage of PCPs in family or general medicine, compared to the other areas, is higher among rural PCPs and lower among urban PCPs.

Although all PCPs practice in an area of primary care (by definition), a few are board certified in other areas. The following table gives the distribution of PCPs by board certification. There is little difference betwenn the percentage of board-cerified rural PCPs and the percentage of board-certified urban PCPs.
