Camille Jordan was born on 5 January 1838 in Lyon France. He studied mathematics at the famous École Polytechnique in Paris, as part of his engineering training (a common profession for mathematicians at the time). Jordan worked as engineer, before obtaining academic positions at École Polytechnique and College de France. He was married with eight children, although tree of his sons were killed in World War I. Jordan died on 22 January 1922 in Paris.
